Fun Facts:
  • Meraxes (Mur-rax-ease) - A huge theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Argentina. It was scientifically described in 2022 from a remarkably complete skeleton. Meraxes is thought to have measured between 10 and 11 metres in length. The top of the skull and snout bore bony crests, thought to have shown maturity and played a role in social signalling. Its short forelimbs support the hypothesis that many dinosaurs related to Meraxes had reduced forelimbs reminiscent of those observed in other apex predators such as tyrannosaurs. Fossil material associated with this genus is thought to represent a dinosaur between 39 and 53 years old making it one of the oldest non-avian theropods described to date. The genus name refers to a female dragon from George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the books behind the popular television series Game of Thrones.
