Dimetrodon is een geslacht van uitgestorven synapsiden. Dimetrodon behoorde tot de orde Pelycosauria en de familie Sphenacodontidae. Alle soorten waren carnivore landbewoners die leefden in het Vroeg-Perm. Fossielen zijn bekend uit de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Duitsland.
Dimetrodon is an extinct relative of primitive mammals characterized by a large, upright, sail-like structure on its back. Dimetrodon lived from about 286 million to 270 million years ago, during the Permian Period, and fossils
of the animal have been found in North America. Dimetrodon was a carnivore that grew to a length of
more than 3.5 meters (11.5 feet).
